MSU Extension develops app to locate Internet connection

STARKVILLE, Miss. -- A new mobile application can help Mississippians and visitors find high-speed Internet connections based on location.

Connect Mississippi funded the development of an app and a website that promotes broadband adoption and supports innovative broadband solutions. Both were developed by the Mississippi State University Extension Service Center for Technology Outreach.

“Most other states provide a broadband mapping tool hosted on websites,” said Roberto Gallardo, associate Extension professor in the Center for Technology Outreach. “In Mississippi, we decided to take it a step further and not only provide more options for users to obtain a list of broadband providers, but also make it mobile-native since the majority of Internet users now access the Internet through their mobile devices.”

Apple and Android users can use the app to locate broadband Internet in three ways: by tapping on a map, by entering a specific address or by using the smartphone’s GPS.

Connect Mississippi was born out of a 2010 grant-funded initiative to help Mississippians adopt and access broadband Internet. To learn more about Connect Mississippi, visit http://www.connectmississippi.org.
